How Friendly Should You Be?

Social networking is reaching epidemic proportions. FaceBook is growing by 600,000 users per day. How to Twitter was the featured article on the front-page of The Culture section of the Wall Street Journal last weekend. The term social networking implies "friendship". Don’t kid yourself, social networking is about marketing, and anyone from Bill Gates to my next-door neighbor is doing it.

How do I want to be known and what do I want to accomplish are two questions you need to explore before joining LinkedIn, FaceBook, Twitter or any other social networking site. If you are unclear as to why you are opening an account, you might find yourself posting information that could be a blot on your career. Like it or not everything is public on the web. Your innocent post about getting drunk last night might be read by your co-worker in the next cubicle.

“The networking that matters is helping people achieve their goals. Doing it reliably and repeatedly, so that over time people have an interest in helping you achieve your goals.” marketing guru Seth Godin said in a You Tube video.

Whether it was wise to accept my colleagues as “friends” remains to be seen. After all I am providing access to useful information or am I?
